On June 18, 2017, the Lord called Eleanora Virginia Jackson home to be with him.
Nora, as she was affectionally called, was born August 30, 1927, in Brunswick County, Virginia, and was the second child of James Edward and Jennie Venerable Jackson.
Not long after she was born, her family moved to Baltimore County, Maryland and at age 7, Nora’s parents moved them to the eastside of Baltimore City.
At the age of 15, she met her future husband, Earnest Pettus. In 1945, at the age of 17, Nora graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Baltimore. On October 30, 1946, Nora and Earnest were married in the preacher’s house. Out of this union, they had seven children.
In 1948, Nora began working at Johns Hopkins Hospital as a nurse’s aide. In 1954, Nora and Earnest moved to Scranton, PA. Nora joined Scranton’s Bethel A.M.E. Church and eventually became involved in the Missionary Society, Gospel Choir, and crushed cans to help raise money for the church. After the family moved to Tobyhanna, PA in 1970, Nora was the Junior and then Senior Vice President of The Auxiliary to John J. Michaels, VFW Post 5207. In 1986, the family moved back to Scranton.
Nora loved to cook, especially treats like her Blueberry Buckle Cake and her homemade yeast rolls were the talk of the town.
Nora was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earnest, and her first born son, Reginald. She leaves behind to cherish her memories son, Gregory (Mona), and five daughters, VeNita, Patricia, JoAnn (Lamine), Brenda and Colleen (George); one daughter-in-law, Shirley (Reg); 11 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
