Joseph E. Serra, 87, of Scranton died Wednesday January 4, 2017 at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit following a brief illness. His wife of 58 years is the former Margaret Genovese.
Born in Scranton he was the son of the late Vito and Palma Conte Serra. A graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1947, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Columbia Distributing and most recently within the Lackawanna County Controller’s Office.
Joe was an avid model railroader which he enjoyed most with his children and grandchildren. He was a spirited Boston Red Sox and SWB Railriders fan, but his greatest joy was in spending time with his family. He was a current member of Connelly American Legion Post #568 and previously at Major Edward J. Poch Post #948.
Also surviving are sons Joseph M. Serra and wife Rita, South Abington Twp., Mark Serra and wife Maria, Moscow; daughter Marianne Stoko and husband PJ, Moosic; grandchildren Christine Cornell and husband Travis, Jennifer Serra, Joseph R. Serra, Dominic Serra and wife Jill, and Gina Serra.
He was preceded in death by sisters Concetta Gilday, Grace Paranich and infant Josephine; brothers William and Frank Serra.
The funeral will be conducted on Friday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave. with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. John Neumann Parish at Nativity Church, 633 Orchard St. Scranton. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Italian-American Cemetery. Friends and family may call Thursday (TODAY) from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.
