Patricia Schirra of the East Mountain section of Scranton died Saturday January 14,2017 at the
Geisinger Community Medical Center following a brief illness. Her husband of 63 years is
Cyril "Cy" Schirra.
Born in Scranton, Pat was raised in Dunmore and graduated from Dunmore Senior High
School, Class of 1952 and finally resided in the East Mountain section of Scranton since 1964.
She was the daughter of the late Billy and Emma Sorbish Carmichael. A loyal and hard
worker, she served on the City of Scranton Planning Commission for 5 years under the
direction of Mayor Eugene Peters and for 23 years she worked as a manager for the
Lackawanna County Housing Authority.
Pat was a compassionate, kind and loving mother who cherished her husband, her two sons
and two daughters. She was an exceptional cook, baker and loved gardening and her flowers.
She was blessed with the ability to create beautiful surroundings inside and outside of her
home in conjunction with her sense of style. She was always at the height of style and fashion
and was an avid shopper and bargain hunter.
She was a generous and faithful friend who was fun loving and enjoyed going to the casino.
She was also an avid lover of animals who found joy in caring for her two cats; Peanuts and
Buttons.
Pat volunteered as a Eucharistic minister at Holy Name of Jesus Church. She served as Presi---
dent and Treasurer for the Woman's Society at Holy Name of Jesus Church and also as Presi-
dent of the Boy Scouts Troop #10. She conducted fashion shows for both organizations. Most
recently she was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Scranton.
Pat is survived by her loving, devoted and caring husband "Cy"; sons J. Michael and Paul
Alan; daughter Laurie Ann Schirra who was Mom's caregiver in every way and along with Cy
kept Pat's life full of strength and hope. Also surviving are grandchildren Christopher Balish,
Ashley & Kyle Arena, Lauren Arena Novick, Trevor and Tyler Schirra; a loving niece Karen
Lucke along with many other nieces and nephews; two very special friends Elaine Bernardi
and Judith Plishka.
Pat was preceded in death by her angel daughter Susan P. Schirra Arena, which left a very big
hole in her heart.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday January 25th at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate
Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave. Scranton with Rev. Joseph Sica as celebrant. Friends and
family may pay their respects Wednesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until Mass time in the
church.
Pat's request was for interment to be private and will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 712 S.
Keyser Ave. Taylor, PA 18517 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted and are under the care of the Miller Bean Funeral
